While much of the philosophising and overall grim mood of the first DCEU film seemed a bit out of place for a Superman movie, the scenes involving Pa and Clark Kent give an indication of where Snyder was possibly trying to go. Clark's willingness to do good and help out his friends where he can is somewhat challenged by his overly protective father figure, Jonathon. The moment when a young Clark saves his fellow classmates from drowning by lifting a school bus to safety is the trigger for a telling off at the hands of his adoptive father, and opens up an intriguing plot arc.

The argument could have sounded ridiculous or ill conceived coming from a number of actors, but Kevin Costner is so strong in his delivery that it makes for dialogue that any Father can relate to. While Snyder never goes as far to indicate that Jonathon Kent's sentiments are correct, Costner's delivery ensures you know that his feelings very much come from a place of love.

The decision to have Pa Kent killed off in a tornado while begging his son not to help was a questionable change in mythology, with the original Superman movie's depiction of Jonathon dying of a heart attack far more fitting. The initial discussion between father and son however was still a strong one, the question of putting yourself or others first one worth asking, even if Superman will always choose the latter- unless his Dad's in a tornado apparently.
