12 Movie Idiots Who Basically Created Their Own Villains
3. Jesse James Was A Bit Of A Douche-Bag
Like Mr Incredible's mishandling of Buddy, Jesse James engineers his own demise by turning a sycophantic follower into an enemy through mistreatment, and it all pretty much comes down to an inflated sense of self-worth.
The film plays with ideas of mythology and celebrity, and presents Bob Ford as a snubbed fan, who tries and fails on multiple occasions to join the gang of his idol, who he obsesses over dangerously, and is eventually pushed to kill his idol after being shunned too many times. Given the number of celebrities killed by fans, it could be possible that Ford would have killed James regardless of his treatment, but the film is careful to underline the fact that the iconic anti-hero pushed his killer to take the ultimate leap.
He actually mocks Robert more than once, and abuses his desire to help by using him to move furniture rather than help with an actual criminal plot, and it is those triggers that help turn Ford's shattered illusions of James into an outright desire to take glory for himself by killing him.
