12 Movie Idiots Who Basically Created Their Own Villains

6. Tommy DeVito Couldn't Take Some Ball-Busting - Goodfellas

Goodfellas Tommy
Warner Bros.

It was always inevitable that Joe Pesci's DeVito would end up getting whacked by someone, but he engineered his own doom by imagining himself to be worthy of more respect than he actually ever was. He might have been a formidable figure in the mob, but he was no made man and the moment he took it upon himself to exact bloody vengeance on the slurs made by Billy Batts, who ended up being killed in one of the most memorably grim murder scenes in film history.

Tommy's votality, and his inability to just walk away and not explode without measuring the consequences lead to his death directly, and all Batts does is stick to the established hierarchy of the mob. He puts Tommy in his place - and though there's probably no need to do so in front of his date, Billy's goading is no more than a ruffling of Tommy's hair, or the comic busting of his balls, which he should accept as part and parcel of his lower status.

But when he does the unthinkable and kills Batts, Tommy creates a dastardly plot against himself and signs his own death warrant.
