11. For Dick Hallorann To Do Something - The Shining

Stanley Kubrick's seminal horror film has Jack Nicholson going mental in a creepy old hotel as he tries to complete his novel, of course, who - along with his son - finds himself exposed to an array of terrifying visions from a weird cast of former guests. When Jack cracks for good and tries to murder his family, Dick Hallorann, the hotel chef, senses a disturbance in the force (?), and makes his way up to the hotel to see what's happening. After several extended sequences depicting Hallorann's arduous journey through the snow, though, all that happens is that he turns up and gets axed by Jack - literally. Anyone familiar with the novel was presumably expecting Hallorann to survive, given that he does in the book (making this even more inane), but for everybody else, the reaction probably went something like: "What the hell was the point of him?" He literally doesn't do anything of worth here.
