There are few films I want to succeed more this year than Transcendence, the directorial debut of Christopher Nolan's resident cinematographer, Wally Pfister. It has a lot working for it, namely an all-star cast including Johnny Depp as its star, and Morgan Freeman, Paul Bettany, Rebecca Hall, Kate Mara and Cillian Murphy in various supporting roles. Furthermore, the premise, relating to transhumanism (altering the human condition through melding it with technology) is sure to provide plenty of food-for-thought for audiences. However, from the trailer we've seen so far, I'm just not all that convinced yet. The movie will either be a mind-blowing sci-fi, or as is more likely with ambitious concepts like this, it ultimately gets too caught up and muddled by its own complexity, and ends up being a mess. Not to be too pessimistic about it, I do really want this one to work, but first-time directors are always a big risk, even if they have worked extensively with one of Hollywood's great contemporary filmmakers.
