12 Movies Based On Real Life Serial Killers
11. Karla (2006)
Another flick that might have slipped below the radar of even the most enthusiastic of serial killer fans, Karla spotlights Canadian serial killer couple Karla Homolka and Paul Bernardo. Unlike many other serial killer profiles, there are only three victims tied to the couple. Karla claims that she was an unwilling accomplice and is living free in Canada today.
The film stars Laura Prepon in the titular role alongside Misha Collins. The couple kidnapped, raped, and murdered three women, including Karla's own sister. Told through a psychological evaluation in present-day, Karla describes the crimes of her past while asserting that she only committed the acts of violence to preserve her own safety.
Released in Canada initially, the film received mixed reviews from critics and even the families of the victims themselves. While the families did not oppose the release, other critics have said that the focus on Karla's abuse paints her as more of a victim than the murdered women. However, it gives more restraint to the sensitivity of the murders unlike other films and generally provides an honest depiction of Bernardo.
