12 Movies Christopher Nolan Should Make Next

11. A Lower-Budget Sci-Fi Movie

Interstellar cost a whopping $165 million, and despite the mixed critical notices, the movie has, to its credit, already grossed almost double its budget at the worldwide box office. That said, it was perhaps Nolan's ultimate indulgence, allowing him to deliver a movie that was completely away with the fairies, and it frankly doesn't feel like increasingly large budgets could really serve him well anymore. What Nolan possibly needs to do now is return to lower-budget fare, and though "low budget" isn't a term typically associated with the genre, it isn't impossible. Just look at Duncan Jones' Moon, shot for just $5 million but looking like it cost considerably more, and Neil Blomkamp's District 9, costing just $30 million but easily resembling $100 million (admittedly due to Peter Jackson's help, no doubt). If Nolan opted for a less bombastic, more character-driven sci-fi, then a return to the genre so soon would be more than welcome. How Likely Is It?: Well, it's not very realistic that Nolan's going to drop from a $165 million studio tentpole to something with 5% of the budget. A mid-budget sci-fi (say, $60 million) is more realistic, but as long as it puts more paid to its characters than the special effects, then this could be an interesting low-fi effort (at least compared to his $150+ million budgets) for the director. Still, it's doubtful Nolan would repeat himself so soon, so don't count on it. 3/10.
