12 Movies In 2018 That Were Unfairly Hated

By 2018, it's fair to say that critics and audiences alike were suffering through young adult genre fatigue, and understandably so.

Yet if the third and final entry into The Maze Runner franchise basically had the last word on the genre - not counting nothing-duds like The Darkest Minds - it most certainly closed things out on a barmy high-note.

The Maze Runner movies have always felt a little classier and more ambitious than your typical YA movies, in large part due to Wes Ball's uncommonly sharp direction and a top-drawer cast daring to take the material seriously.

That all goes double for this finale, which beefs up the action sequences while delivering crisp visual effects which shame movies made for many times its slender $62 million budget (looking at you, Black Panther).

It's certainly too long at almost 2.5 hours in length, but if this is the alternative to splitting the final book into two movies, then so be it. The Death Cure is totally absurd, yet compulsively watchable thanks to its expertly-helmed action and rat-a-tat pacing.
