The Disney remake trend added to its ranks in 2019, with Dumbo, Aladdin, and The Lion King, and though all were hyped to the usual Disney standards, nostalgia and the chance to see 'live action' lions naturally put The Lion King at the head of the queue.
With comparisons to Jon Favreau's Jungle Book from just three years prior inevitable, the movie fell short of expectations. The technology to make these animals seem real was no longer new and exciting, and the movie was essentially a shot for shot remake with very few new aspects included. Was it really necessary?
But surely, that is the point of a remake. A journey through nostalgia and an already well known story, touched up with new technology and a fresh cast. Nothing else should have been expected, and if there would have been any major changes to the story, Favreau would surely have been crucified for messing with a classic.
To avoid the issue altogether, would it be so difficult for Disney to work on more original movies rather than remake after remake?
