12 Movies In 2019 That Were Unfairly Hated

For a movie that became the first R-Rated movie to cross the one billion dollar mark at the box office, was nominated for Best Picture at the Golden Globes, and received no fewer than 11 Oscar nominations (including Best Picture), Joker has been met with strangely mixed reviews.

Incredibly, despite an audience score of 88%, Joker racked up a critic score of just 69% on the Tomatometer. To put this into perspective, this is less than other 2019 movies like Angry Birds 2 (73%), Jumanji: The Next Level (71%) and Terminator: Dark Fate (70%), and puts it in the bottom five out of all Best Picture nominees at the Academy Awards in the last decade.

While a lot of these nominations may have come as a surprise, and against the likes of Marriage Story and 1917 a Best Picture win is unlikely, being described as unnecessary, toothless, and a sad joke is giving the movie far less respect than it deserves.

In one of the most saturated genres in cinema, Joker did something completely different, and tackled tough but important issues like mental health and how society can affect it, all while allowing the audience to empathise with a character known as the Clown Prince of Crime.
