After Rami Malek earned himself an Oscar with his work in the incredible Bohemian Rhapsody, and Taron Egerton won a Golden Globe after portraying Elton John in Rocketman, musician biopics are more popular than ever. Netflix joined the club with The Dirt in 2019, the story of Motley Crue.

Machine Gun Kelly, Douglas Booth, Daniel Webber, and Iwan Rheon star as the four misfits that make up the band, in a look at their often far from glamorous rise to fame and glory.

The Tomatometer will often see a big difference between the audience score and the critic score, but this Netflix movie really stretches this further than most. Though it boasts a near perfect 95% from the audience, the critics have added up to a shockingly bad 39% approval rating.

Is it on the same level as Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocketman? Absolutely not. But it certainly doesn't deserve the hate it received. Much of the criticisms stem from the lack of strong female characters, and showcasing the kind of drugs and boozing the band indulged in back in the day. Anyone who expected anything different from a biopic based around a band as infamous as Motley Crue were bound to be disappointed from the get go. It's like being mad at a Michael Bay movie for having lots of explosions.
