12 Movies You Probably Hated The First Time Round (But Loved The Second)

4. Drive

The First Time: "Hey, I thought this was going to be like The Fast and the Furious? Or at least like GTA: Vice City, given how much it looks and sounds like that game. Where's all the driving, and shooting and action and stuff? Why does Ryan Gosling spend so much time staring into the middle-distance rather than talking? Why does he do so much for a woman who won't even put out?" The Second Time: The promotional materials for Drive were so misleading that one American woman even attempted to sue on the grounds of false advertising, and though the woman doesn't come off in the best light, she wasn't really wrong. Though we got a film that was in many respects better than the Fast and the Furious-type flick she had paid to see, she was essentially manipulated into seeing a stoic, art-house gangster film, and going by the film's impressive $76 million box office haul (against a $13 million budget), so were many others. Many of us were frustrated by Nicolas Winding Refn's deliberate approach after the excesses of Bronson, but a second viewing proves much more fruitful. Granted, if the slow-paced directorial style rankled you that much, then another go-around probably won't help, but with expectations adjusted from the awful marketing, the film just makes a lot more sense. Sadly, I can't say the same for Only God Forgives, which only grew more embarrassing and infuriating on a second take...
