12 Movies You Probably Hated The First Time Round (But Loved The Second)
11. 2001: A Space Odyssey
The First Time: "It looks fantastic, but I'm not emotionally engaged in the plot, and the pacing just drags on and on. Do I really need 15 minutes of phantasmagorical imagery in order to tell this story? And what was with the giant space baby at the end? What was everyone so fussed about?" The Second Time: This one happened to me. I watched the film as a teenager and couldn't get into it, but I revisited it while at University, and the film opened itself up (and no, it wasn't due to any illicit substances I was or wasn't smoking). It's a film that totally suffers from all the hype bestowed upon it, but if you give it a fair, patient chance, it is a majestic, ground-breaking, awe-inspiring work of both science fiction and cinema in general. Not everything makes total sense, but there's a lot of fun to be had piecing it together for yourself. As a sensory experience, it is one of the most overwhelming and brilliant pieces of cinema ever conceived.
