12 Movies You Probably Hated The First Time Round (But Loved The Second)
8. Mulholland Drive
The First Time: "That scene where Naomi Watts and Laura Harring made out was really hot. Some of the individual scenes were really cool and weird, but what was the point of it all? What happened in the second half? What was the ending about? And what the Hell does "silencio" mean?" The Second Time: It isn't a great endorsement for a film when you have to tell people to go online and read about it to understand what it all means, but that's exactly what I did after a disastrously confusing first viewing of David Lynch's mesmerising Mulholland Drive. When you read about the most popular theory (that the first half of the film is a young ingenue's dream, and the second half is the nightmarish reality), everything begins to click into place, and the movie makes a whole lot more sense. Even if you haven't elected to read any theories, having the plot front-loaded into your brain allows you to pick up so much for yourself on a second approach, such that the experience is more gratifying and less of a headache.
