12 Movies That Were Dead On Arrival
9. Ghostbusters
This one’s a little ugly. When plans were announced for an all-female Ghostbusters reimagining in 2014, the response from certain corners of the internet was, unsurprisingly, an unpleasant one. While some simply wished to bemoan the continuing cycle of remakes of beloved existing franchises rather than new ideas, many took exception with the fact that the film was predominantly populated by a diverse cast of women.
The online backlash to the film was instant and much of it was hateful stuff, clearly based on misogyny and racism. While there were people out there who were simply big fans of the Ghostbusters franchise, concerned that a further instalment would be the final nail in a property already damaged by the disappointing Ghostbusters 2, the dedication many had to attacking the film was patently based on prejudice and hate.
To make matters worse, the finished product was only OK. It made back its production budget, but factoring in publicity and the rest, it was enough of a bomb to kibosh any notion of a follow up. With the talent involved it’s a shame the film wasn’t at least a critical smash to shove in the face of the internet’s noisy idiots.
