12 Movies & TV Shows You Didn't Know Were Remade On Broadway
9. Charlie And The Chocolate Factory
A classic for children’s films, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was a clear choice for a musical remake.
After big success in London's West End, the show finally moved to Broadway in 2017. Songs like "Candy Man" and "Pure Imagination" were included in the musical playing on people's nostalgia for the original film. Christian Borle, best known now for playing William Shakespeare in "Something Rotten", landed the coveted role of Willy Wonka, ensuring a successful run on the Broadway stage.
But, critics weren't as impressed as anticipated. Nods to old songs and Wonka's recognizable purple costume were not enough and reporters claimed the musical rendition strayed too far from the original story. After only a few months the US production closed but the musical can still be seen on tour across the country.
