5. Cabin In The Woods
Any one who was expecting a straightforward slasher flick when they watched The Cabin in the Woods was no doubt pleasantly surprised (or incredibly confused). As a group of teenagers chill out in a deserted forest cabin, they accidentally unleash a horde of zombies.
Over time, they learn their encounter with the undead was staged by a secret organisation who have humans sacrificed by supernatural monsters to appease forgotten deities called The Ancient Ones. To avoid the wrath of these gods, a group of slasher archetypes (or stereotypes) must be killed until the only one left alive is the virgin.
When the virgin of her group, Dana, is informed that she must kill her friend, Marty, to save humanity, she refuses, believing mankind isn't worth saving. In the film's final moments, she and Marty share a joint before the Ancient Greek titan, Kronos, bursts from the planet's depths, preparing to destroy the world.
Hilariously, the first question asked at a Q&A after The Cabin in the Woods previewed was if there would be a sequel. Director, Drew Goddard, responded with, "Have you seen the ending to my movie?"
