12 Movies You Didn’t Notice Were About Mental Illness

5. All Of The Muppets Films

And you just thought they were wacky, funny characters designed to entertain kid (and adults) €“ nope, the Muppets are basically the onscreen version of a psychiatrist€™s waiting room. Egotistical, vain and a pure limelight hogger (pun intended), Miss Piggy is a textbook narcissist while her abused significant other Kermit the Frog seemed to be suffering from Stockholm syndrome until he finally kicked the cantankerous sow to the curb this year. Meanwhile in between his bouts of mania Animal €“ who is constantly reminded that you beat, not eat drums €“ seems to have a bad case of pica, a compulsion to eat weird inedible things. Henson€™s Sesame Street muppet cast are also riddled with neuroses. Though Elmo has been kicking around since the 1970s he hasn€™t matured in any way, a classic case of Peter Pan syndrome, while Count von Count€™s number obsession is a clear sign of OCD. The Cookie Monster€™s uncontrollable appetite could be binge eating disorder and poor Oscar the Grouch suffers from both compulsive hoarding and agoraphobia. Think about it: how often have you seen him leave his trash can?
