Who says Hollywood is out of ideas? Oh, that's right - just about everyone. Like many movies, 21 Jump Street originated as a TV show. A fairly high profile one at that - but one that had been off the air for years. Most people know that Johnny Depp got his big break there, but how many younger movie/television fans could really identify it, or had even seen it? So you can't blame Sony for taking advantage and turning it into a big screen reboot that, albeit with a different tone and completely new actors outside a Depp cameo, was fairly entertaining. For fans of the younger generation, 21 Jump Street is pretty much a movie, period. Same with Miami Vice, Charlie's Angels, Get Smart, The A-Team, etc. And even those followed the likes of The Fugitive in the '90s and similar big screen re-imaginings. However those are all well known enough to at least be recognised as television series. That's not always the case with television properties that are translated to the big screen. There are plenty of others that many audience members will have forgotten, or never knew, started out on television in the first place. Genre shows, series that were cancelled after just one or two seasons, and shows so old the core of its fan base have aged out of the equation as far as the box office returns (and marketing departments) are concerned.
