12 Movies You Wrongly Thought Bombed In 2018

11. Slender Man

Budget: $19 million (approx)

Box Office: $51.7 million

On paper, Slender Man probably should've been an easy box office smash, what with its generic-looking PG-13 horror thrills aimed perfectly at the tween demographic.

Except Sony clearly should've made this movie 5-ish years ago, and in 2018, people were long over the iconic Slender Man meme.

As a result, Sylvain White's controversial horror flick had a softer-than-expected commercial performance, but as everyone should know by now, horror movies almost never bomb at the box office.

Slender Man's original production cost a reported $10 million, though extensive re-shoots and re-edits due to controversy surrounding the real-life Slender Man stabbing incident caused the budget to balloon to an estimated $19 million.

Even with universal critical disdain, a savage "D–" CinemaScore and a general lack of audience interest, Slender Man still recouped over 2.5x its costs.

Five years ago this movie probably could've cracked $100 million easily, but thanks to poor timing, it had to settle for a merely acceptable performance. Still, not bad for a movie that very nearly ended up dumped on Netflix.
