12 People Who Hated Working On DC Movies

2. Richard Donner - Superman II

On reflection, Warner Bros and the Salkinds probably regret setting up the first two Superman movies to shoot simultaneously. Thanks to that decision, the producers were forced to edit Marlon Brando's scenes out of the sequel completely despite filming them (thanks to Brando's astronomical demands for 11.75% of the US box office take) and they basically had to waste a lot of perfectly fine footage.

When they fired Richard Donner and brought in Richard Lester it cost them - not least because Donner's film was better as proven when his cut was eventually released - but it came after a very public clash between the two parties. Donner was angered by the decision to cut Brando and publicly talked about needing full control if he was to go forward. Clearly, he wasn't happy with the studio's interference.

Donner and the Salkinds had clashed all through the production of Superman and its sequel thanks to over-spending and the schedule and Donner and co-producer Pierre Spengler didn't get on so much that he insisted he wouldn't return if Spengler had a job. The experience was so distasteful for Donner that he consciously chose a smaller movie (Inside Moves) to take his mind off it.
