12 R-Rated Comic Book Movies We Need To See After Logan & Deadpool

7. Venom (And Carnage)

It can only be a matter of time before Sony try to make Spider-Man's coolest nemesis (or his angry red sibling) work on the big screen, and there's absolutely no way either would work as a character in the MCU. Not in a pure adaptation anyway.

But, there is still some chance of a Venom led spin-off made by Sony with Carnage somehow also involved, and that's the best way to go with it. Particularly with an R-rating.

The Likelihood

The biggest issue for anyone wanting anything R-rated related to Spider-Man is that Marvel are currently in a very strong creative position over the direction of even the Sony-led spin-offs. Kevin Feige will be overseeing them, and he's the reason the MCU isn't as dark as it could be - and there's absolutely no way he'd change a formula radically that was delivering billion dollar box office hauls.

Disney's Bob Iger also expressly confirmed that they "don't have any plans to make R-rated Marvel movies,” after the success of Deadpool. That might not seem to mean much, with Sony presumably owning the rights to Venom separately, but Disney would definitely still have some sway even outside the MCU.

If Marvel really are introducing Carnage in Spider-Man Homecoming, that'd change everything, but even then Sony might not be too keen on offering spin-offs that are so contradictory to the MCU in tone.
