12 Reasons Why Justice League Is Worse Than Batman V Superman
5. There's No Sense Of A Larger World
One of the biggest reasons why Justice League fails is because it never effectively portrays what the titular team are actually fighting for. Steppenwolf plans on destroying the world, but the world doesn't seem to know that anything sinister is afoot, even when a whole city is sprouting alien pipes and Parademons are invading Gotham.
The movie tries to humanise the threat a bit by constantly returning to one specific family in the thick of it, but these scenes actually make it appear as though they're the only people being affected by the supposed world-ending events. Likewise, the lack of focus on characters reacting to Superman literally rising from the dead adds to this detachment, as do the nondescript locations that provide the backdrop for most of the film.
You could argue that Batman v Superman probably attempted too much world building in its protracted runtime, but at least it communicated the gravity of the stakes at play. You got a sense of the locations these heroes existed in and how their actions had impacted it, whereas the events of Justice League could have taken place virtually everywhere and it wouldn't have changed anything.
