12 Reasons Why Justice League Is Worse Than Batman V Superman
4. None Of The Comedy Works
Justice League is not a funny film. Despite both Whedon and Snyder attempting to inject more humour into the movie to lighten the franchise's often-criticised dour mood, it feels completely out of place and ham-fisted, with only a few gags actually landing.
The biggest crime isn't that this lighter material isn't funny though, but that the misguided tone often undercuts scenes which could have been emotionally engaging.
An early interaction between Martha Kent and Lois Lane discussing their lives after losing Clark should have been a powerful moment - and damn if Amy Adams doesn't try her hardest to sell the emotion of the sequence - but it's offset by two out-of-nowhere gags.
Much has been said about Martha calling Lois "thirsty" during this scene, but it's the sweary interviewee on the TV just before the conversation that's the most jarring, and is indicative of the lazy approach to comedy the movie has as a whole.
There is a way to make the often overly-serious DCEU funny, but quips and Marvel-inspired oddball comedy aren't the way to go about it.
