12 Recent Films That Fell Apart In The Final Act
2. The Menu
Can we all just admit that The Menu was seriously dumb?
This comedy-horror, which centers around a very exclusive restaurant for rich customers run by the famous chef Julian (Ralph Fiennes) who is actually planning to kill himself, his staff and all of his customers by the end of the night, starts out beautifully.
The first act introduces the characters well and is absolutely loaded with tension, but the film shows its hand far too early by dropping the first outbreak of violence at the end of the first act, rather than delaying it for maximum tension.
From this point forth the film gets more and more ridiculous, with the inevitable ending being padded out more and more in increasingly stupid ways. For example, at one point Julian allows all of the men to try and escape on foot while sending his staff after them. Inevitably, all of the diners are recaptured; what was the point of this?
At another point, a member of the Coast Guard comes in on his boat only for it to turn out he's a line-cook in disguise. How did Julian set this up? And what was the point of setting this up? Furthermore, almost none of the guests do anything to save themselves and just allow themselves to be killed... OK then.
The very end of the film is really good, but everything else about this final act is just nonsensical.
