As one of the greatest horror movies ever made, Stanley Kubrick's The Shining was hardly crying out for a sequel, but with Hollywood's recent Stephen King renaissance back in full flow, Doctor Sleep seemed to be in pretty good hands with Mike Flanagan both writing and directing.

Flanagan has established himself as one of the horror genre's leading auteurs in recent years thanks to his work on the likes of Oculus, Hush and Netflix's smash hit The Haunting of Hill House. Following in the footsteps of someone as Kubrick would be a daunting task for anyone, and Doctor Sleep ultimately stumbled.

In deliberately aiming for a more thoughtful and contemplative approach to the material, the plot machinations seemed to be wading through treacle, slowing things down to a crawl as events unfolded with little or no energy behind them. Clocking in at an unnecessary 152 minutes, with an extra half an hour tacked on to the Director's Cut, Doctor Sleep's attempt at homage to one of the masters more often than not underwhelms to the point of tedium.

I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
