12 Recent Trailers That Massively Outshone Their Movies

2. Joker

Brightburn Mask
Warner Bros.

A film centered around Batman's arch-nemesis, with Joaquin Phoenix taking the mantle as the titular character was enough to grab anyone's attention. And when the first official trailer debuted, the film seemed to carry a very mature idea that (not since The Dark Knight) had comic book movies been seen through such a lens.

The pacing of the trailer is one of its best qualities. A glimpse into the evolution of Arthur Fleck into Joker might have been better because subconsciously we don't really need to know where the Joker came from. If your only interest was to see Joaquin Phoenix dressed as a terrifying cigarette-smoking clown, the trailer would have been enough.

The film itself has divided many cinema goers, with some calling it a masterpiece while others suggesting it lacks substance entirely, with only Joaquin's performance being the best part.

The middle-ground is that a shorter story by a sequence of vignettes from the movie would have been a better finished product. The trailers were the highlights of the movie and for good reason. While we knew the film would be an artistic slow-burn, it wasn't expected to be quite so boring during long periods of the film.

I overthink a lot of things. Will talk about pretty much anything for a great length of time. I'm obsessed with General Slocum from the 2002 Spider-Man film. I have questions that were never answered in that entire trilogy!
