1. Godzilla: King Of The Monsters
Following 2014's slightly disappointing rebirth of Godzilla, the one thing fans commented on the most was too many humans and not enough monster.
"Fair enough!" Michael Dougherty must have exclaimed, and so he pieced together a film where not only would we see more of the giant lizard, but three legendary characters too (if you were familiar with Godzilla lore that is).
When the first trailer debuted it looked like all the previous wrongs were righted.
Clair de Lune plays through the trailer alongside genuinely stunning profile shots of King Ghiddorah, Rodan and Mothra. The film looked almost tranquil and as the drama escalated it looked as if the studios heard the criticism of the first film and polished off the problems.
The film looked to have depth, scale and weight to it that we would come to expect from a Godzilla film forged in the 21st Century.
What we got instead was still fun for a monster verses monster flick, but the pacing, flashing lights and absurdly melodramatic character development makes even the most casual cinema-goer wish for a film less messy.
Which is saying something when we're talking about a film about a giant lizard fighting a three-headed dragon.
