3. Sandworms - Beetlejuice
The 1988 film Beetlejuice follows the Maitlands (Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis) as they move in to their new dream home in New England. One day, as they are driving back from town, Barbara Maitland swerves to avoid a dog and ends up driving off a bridge, killing both her and her husband Adam. Initially, the couple don't actually realise that they are dead. They soon put 2 and 2 together, however, when they realise that they have no reflection, find that there is a book called 'The Handbook for the recently Deceased' in their house and, upon trying to leave their house, find that the doors lead to an other-worldly plain known as 'Saturn', which is inhabited by giant sub-sand dwellers known as sandworms - huge, stripey snake-like creatures with two mouths, sharp teeth and a long tongue. Upon retreating back in to their house, the Maitlands soon find that new owners are moving in and they call upon the services of 'bio-exorcist' Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton), who then proceeds to embark on a plot to scare the new owners out. Beetlejuice is a Tim Burton creation and this is reflective in the design of the sandworms, which are very 'Burton-esq' to say the least.
