12 Scariest Sci-Fi Movies Of All Time
2. The Brood
Canadian body horror hero/ A History of Violence
helmer David Cronenberg may have given his name to some of cult comedy Rick and
Morty’s grossest creations, but it’s not like the affectionate homage was
unearned. The director’s career is filled with some of body horror’s most upsetting
creations, with the likes of Scanners’ infamous exploding head, The Fly’s
tragically disgusting Brundlefly, and the infected denizens of Shivers all vying
for a coveted place on this list.
But these are the true blue scariest sci-fi flicks ever created, and what’s scarier than love?
Okay, maybe that was a little corny, but watch 1979’s Oliver Reed-starring The Brood and try telling us we’re wrong. The flick follows a mother who channels her internalized frustration, hate, and anger into an externalized mutated womb wherein gestates the titular brood, a set of bloodthirsty monster children who enact her horrific telepathic bidding.
It’s a gruesome premise and the use of children as conduits of bloodshed makes for some horrifying sequences, resulting in one of the genre’s scariest hours from a director who might, just maybe, have been going through a bitter divorce and custody battle at the time of this film’s creation.
