12 Sci-Fi Movie Endings That Were Almost Completely Different

9. Terminator 2: Judgement Day - Bad Old Age Makeup And A Senate Seat For John Connor

Mark Hamil Return Of The Jedi
20th Century Fox

For a flick that knows how to turn up the cheese factor and a director known for his more sentimental streak, the ending of T2: Judgement Day is a surprisingly dark and uncompromising one, seeing Linda Hamilton’s hard-edged heroine driving off into the dark night as her son mourns his lost friend who’s just sacrificed himself to take down the villainous T-1000.

Okay, so it’s not as dark as the first film’s “practically a robotic slasher film” brutality, but it’s a pretty bleak ending for a big budget summer blockbuster, and the scene certainly beats its original saccharine coda. Luckily audiences were spared the sight of Linda Hamilton in embarrassingly bad old age makeup looking off in the distance as her now-adult son, a US senator, ensures that Skynet’s evil vision for our future will never come to pass.

On the other hand, at least this ending would have closed the door for further awful sequels…
