12 Sci-Fi Movie Remakes Coming In 2020 (And Beyond)
11. The Invisible Man
When Tom Cruise's The Mummy was uncharacteristically - but deeply ironically - devoid of life, it looked like Universal's intended shared Monsterverse - the Dark Universe to give it its official title - was dead on arrival. We were supposed to get a new Wolfman, a new Frankenstein, a Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde (with Russell Crowe) and a new take on The Invisible Man starring Johnny Depp, but as quickly as The Mummy landed with a sad, wet thud, all of them seemed to flatline.
But then Blumhouse did what Blumhouse always do and stepped in to rescue the franchise, injecting new life and bringing in Leigh Whannell to direct a wholly different reboot of The Invisible Man, which wouldn't be starring Depp any more.
Universal clearly still see the value in their Monsterverse franchise, though. Peter Cramer, president of production at Universal, talked up the project to suggest exactly that:
“Throughout cinematic history, Universal’s classic monsters have been reinvented through the prism of each new filmmaker who brought these characters to life. We are excited to take a more individualized approach for their return to screen, shepherded by creators who have stories they are passionate to tell with them.”
