Back in the 90s, Rob Zombie was attached to remaking classic 50s b-movie horror The Blob, with concept art hitting the web not so long ago, but that project died and the world turned on. Now, Simon West is the man charged with directing the remake and he has some genre-bending aspirations.

Back in 2017, he gave an interview to say that he plans to make the movie more of a sci-fi than a horror:

"I am always developing several projects at once. The Blob is one of the things I would like to make and part of my reinvention is to make it more sci-fi than horror. Actually, sci-fi is my favourite genre even though I’ve never made a sci-fi film."

The original, which is now close to 70 years old, remarkably, saw a teenage Steve McQueen and his on-screen girlfriend (played by Aneta Corsaut) battling a giant jelly alien as it sought to eat everything in its path while the local police force refused to believe it was happening. To his credit, West says his monster would be more complex and subtle, which is definitely reason to be excited.

It might still be a little goofy, but it does sometimes feel like sci-fi takes itself a little too seriously these days. There's room for some more goofiness out there.
