So most critics are willing to concede that the belated second sequel to Men in Black, 2012’s MIB III, managed to salvage the failing franchise by changing up its formula through hiring Josh Brolin to play a younger version of Agent K, as well as bringing back a genuinely threatening villain in the form of, er, Flight of the Conchord’s Jermaine Clement.

But this consensus ignores the fact that, whilst 2002’s first sequel is admittedly an undeniable re-tread of the first film, it’s not without its own charms and doesn’t do a terrible job of making the franchise a little lighter in tone.

Okay, so it’s not for everyone, and maybe we just like the coffee-addicted worms too much to deny them more screen time. But Lara Flynn Boyle and Johnny Knoxville make a solid villainous pairing, Rosario Dawson is as engaging as ever as J’s love interest, and even the ending is… Okay the ending doesn’t work, but the rest of the film is nowhere near as lame as some claim, and worth revisiting to see for yourself.
