12 Sci-Fi Movies Plagued By Reshoots

It's not just modern movies that face the wrath of studio executives and test audiences.

The fourth movie in the original Planet Of The Apes series, Conquest, served as a prequel to explain how Earth had been transformed into a planet of apes. Reviews were mixed when it first came out in 1972, with many critics feeling it was far too tame in comparison to its predecessors.

That's partly because the studio ordered the opening and closing fight scenes to be re-cut because they were too violent.

The film was set to begin with police shooting an escaped ape that was covered in horrific injuries but the scene was cut entirely.

The ending originally depicted the film's villain, Governor Breck, being brutally beaten to death by apes wielding rifles, signalling the start of the dystopia depicted in the first film. But after a test audience hated the dark ending, the scene was re-edited so that Breck was attacked but didn't die and new footage and audio of Caesar (not the Andy Serkis one) giving a speech, was recorded to end the movie on a more hopeful note.

In addition all scenes featuring any blood splatter (and there were a lot of them) were cut in order for the film to be rated PG and perform better at the box office.

The original opening has never seen the light of day but the original ending, plus many more graphic moments that were cut, were included in the film's Blu-Ray release.
