6. G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra - 34% Score

Mars Attacks Rotten Tomatoes

Technically more action than science-fiction, but there is a universe where a grounded "Jarhead-version" of G.I. Joe exists and I for one prefer the version we got in 2009 that leans very heavily into the toys and silliness of faux-camp spies and gadgets.

In retrospect, had Rise of Cobra came out five years later in a cultural landscape where over-the-top films like the Fast & Furious franchise reigned supreme, this maniacal G.I. Joe film would have been celebrated by critics as playing into the craziness of ironic cinema.

If you've seen Rise of Cobra, ask yourself honestly if you thought it was a bad film. The set pieces are explosive and exciting enough, the use of absurd technology is fanciful and fun, and (especially looking back) a glance at the cast of this film really cheers on some rising talent.

What's funny is Rise of Cobra is an anti-critic film; made exclusively for fans of the toys and cartoon series, every review acknowledges the nostalgia for a simpler time, but sneers at the lack of a dense plot.

It just goes to show that with an audience score higher than a critics', maybe movies should be judged by genre fans, and not cinema snobs?

I overthink a lot of things. Will talk about pretty much anything for a great length of time. I'm obsessed with General Slocum from the 2002 Spider-Man film. I have questions that were never answered in that entire trilogy!
