12 Shelved Movies That Would've Been INSANE

2. Superman Lives

Nic Cage Superman Lives
Warner Bros.

Background: As a result of his success with the first two Batman films, DC recruited Tim Burton to revive the Superman franchise with an adaptation of The Death of Superman story arc.

The film went through various incarnations, including a re-write from Clerk's Kevin Smith, before finally settling on Dan Gilroy's version which was to include Lex Luthor, Braniac and Doomsday as the film's antagonists. Burton also cast lifelong comic book fan Nicholas Cage as the Man of Steel leading to one of the most iconic photos to ever grace the internet.

Why It Didn't Happen: Unfortunately during the film's troubled development, Warner Brothers began to suffer from a string of commercial flops. This led to the film falling victim to their new streamlined budget and it was cancelled just weeks before filming was due to begin.

Will It Ever Happen? No, but it would be incredible if it did. The proposed film has gone on to become something of a legend in its own right and even gave rise to a 2015 documentary, The Death of "Superman Lives": What Happened?. Thankfully for Cage, his dreams eventually came true when he voiced the character in 2018's Teen Titans Go! To the Movies.
