12 Shocking Documentaries That Will Change How You See The World
1. Grizzly Man (2005)
Timothy Treadwell was a grizzly bear enthusiast and Grizzly Man is his story. Directed by Werner Herzog, the film looks at Treadwell’s life, his interactions with grizzly bears and showcases never before heard footage of his and his girlfriend’s death. The couple were killed by one of the same bears that Treadwell cared for unconditionally, bringing up themes of animal instinct, our roles as humans and the cycle of life.
Herzog uses hours of Treadwell’s footage as well as interviews with friends, family and other professionals to explore his life and claims to be protecting the bears from poachers. There are discussions on whether Treadwell really gained the trust of the bears or if they were just so surprised to be pet by a human that they didn't think to attack him.
Rangers question whether poaching was really a threat or was Treadwell putting them in more danger? Overwhelmingly there is the question of why, for the first time ever did Treadwell continue living with the bears up until October (the period where they begin to hunt for hibernation) on the visit of his death.
Grizzly Man is a commentary on the animal kingdom and the way that despite how much humans attempt to portray themselves as superior, matter very little in the grand scheme of nature.
