An unarmed man being shot in the face by a warlord is already heavy stuff for a PG-13 blockbuster, and this scene set the grim tone for Batman V Superman. Since this character is never given a name in the theatrical version it was assumed he was no-one important, until Zach Snyder confirmed it was actually lovable Jimmy Olson.
Poor Jimmy apparently doesn’t fit anywhere into DC’s plan for their cinematic universe, so Snyder decided to “have fun with him...” by introducing him, and then immediately blowing his brains out.
The intro was removed from the theatrical cut – which was probably DC’s attempt to play it safe – so naturally viewers wouldn’t consider the implications of his how shocking his death was; not until they saw the Ultimate Edition anyway.
