12 Stupid Mistakes That Somehow Made It Into 2013 Movies

5. A Case Of Mistaken Identity - The Bling Ring

Sofia Coppola's The Bling Ring is one of the more distasteful films of the year, withholding moral judgement just enough to condone and actually celebrate the criminal activities of its central starring group of attractive young thieves. Rather than commenting on them as grotesque products of a society that values the irresistible lure of immediate, disposable celebrity, they are presented as Robin Hood like heroes, with aspirational lifestyles. No doubt Coppola would suggest otherwise, but the film glorifies a subject that should be presented as a morality tale, and the result is similar to watching the kind of mind-numbing reality TV that probably informed the real Bling Ring. And as if blurring the line between reality and fiction wasn't explicit enough, the director and her editors managed to miss a glaring mistake that did so even more profoundly. At the end of the movie when Emma Watson's Nicki is being interviewed by Vanity Fair, she calls her sister Gabby, despite the fact that she is called Emily. The reason of course is that Nicki is based on Alexis Neiers, whose sister is called Gabby in real life - a case of reiteration of the source, or just plain stupidity?
