12 Stupid Mistakes That Somehow Made It Into 2014 Movies

4. Where We€™re Going, We Don€™t Need TVs - The Giver

Everyone loves a pop culture reference in modern movies: it shows the director has real credentials as a cinephile, gives the audience a cheap little thrill and it can often help sell under-riding themes in the movie unconsciously. Unfortunately for The Giver, the references have to actually make sense. So when one of the characters casually drops a Marty McFly reference in, we were supposed to be all impressed by the nod, instead of wondering how the hell they knew Back To The Future even existed. Because, as we€™re told quite demonstrably early on, nobody in the community that The Giver is set in has access to TVs or movies, and have had their memories erased. So quite how they know who Marty McFly is is somewhat baffling.
