12 Surprisingly Touching Moments In Extremely Macho Movies
6. Collateral "You Think Anyone Will Notice?"
Michael Mann doesn't really do tear-jerking, but he can certainly craft an emotionally subtle scene that will creep under your skin. In Collateral, Jamie Foxx's mild mannered taxi driver, Max, is forced to transport Tom Cruise's ice-cold hitman, Vincent, to five different targets in one night. Of course the fifth, and final, target proves to be a woman that Max has taken a shine to and so cannot let Vincent complete his job.
Once the movie took this turn it was inevitable that Vincent was going to get his comeuppance, but you may have been surprised at how moving his death actually was. Rather than a Micheal Bay-esque hail of explosions and gunfire we see him and Max blindly shoot at each other in a subway car until one of the bullets hit. Unfortunately for Vincent he is the one to take the fatal bullet and slumps onto the seat of the car as Max enters. It's the recurrence of the line from a previous conversation that provides the subtly effective moment as Vincent calmly turns to Max and asks: "Hey Max. A guy gets on the MTA here in L.A and dies. You think anyone will notice?" It reminds us that Vincent, being a hitman and all, has not only led a pretty despicable life; but that he has also ostricised himself from society to the point where no-one knows or cares if he lives or dies, making it a surprisingly touching death scene.
