12 Terrible Movies That Killed An Actor's Winning Streak
12. The Rum Diary - Johnny Depp
The Streak: Depp's biggest boom period started in 2005 with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, continuing with a ridiculous string of hits: Corpse Bride, three Pirates of the Caribbean sequels, Sweeney Todd (which bagged him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor), The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, Public Enemies, Alice in Wonderland, The Tourist (granted, more with audiences than critics), and animated flick Rango.
The Film That Broke It: This tedious adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson's novel lacks the humour and interesting characters that would've made Depp a fine fit for the role. The movie grossed just $23.9 million against a $45 million budget, and received mixed reviews from critics. After so many smash hits, his first stab at card-carrying art-house fare in a while was something most audiences just weren't prepared for or interested in.
