12 Terrible Recent Movies Destined To Become Cult Classics
11. Criminal
Why It's Terrible: Because Ryan Reynolds apparently can't stay away from body-or-mind-swap movies, here he plays a CIA agent who gets killed trying to stop a nuclear attack, and so his memories are spliced into the mind of the only guy fit for the job, of course, a death row inmate by the way of Jericho Stewart (Kevin Costner).
Reynolds is barely in it despite receiving high billing, the plot is a convoluted mess as expected, and despite an aggressive effort to wring some emotion out of this dreck, it all falls rather flat.
Why It'll Be A Cult Classic: On the other hand, there is something strangely watchable about Criminal in its awfulness. The likes of Tommy Lee Jones and Gary Oldman inexplicably ham their way through the whole thing, and there's an unforgettable scene where Costner steals a guy's food and starts a fight in a London kebab shop.
Outside of a boozed-up Saturday night, who the hell starts a fight when they're ordering their doner and chips? The movie takes the exchange dead seriously, and it's all the more entertaining as a result.
Costner, to his absolute credit, hurls himself headlong into the role, and will likely win the film some fans in the long run, especially as he's been enjoying a middle-age career resurgence as of late.
