WALL-E takes places in the 22nd century after Earth has become an inhospitable wasteland. Humanity is forced to leave the planet and live on a colossal spaceship called the Axiom.

700 years later, the ship sends a drone called EVE to Earth for recon and discovers a thriving plant, verifying that life on the planet is viable again. EVE returns to the Axiom to show the plant to the captain, proving that they can go home. However, it is revealed that the ship’s AI unit, Auto, has secrets orders to make sure the humans stay on the ship forever.

Although it's never stated, it's possible that other drones found evidence for life on Earth many times over the years but Auto kept destroying the evidence.

So why was EVE sent to Earth in the first place? Why would Auto initiate the one action that could jeopardise his protocol? He is the Axiom's main computer so he can control anything the ship does. Why doesn't he just pretend to send a drone? Why doesn't he keep tabs on EVE? Why doesn't Auto destroy EVE after she is sent out and pretend she got lost?
