The Original Plan: Shortly after Denis Villeneuve was hired to direct Blade Runner 2049, he floated the idea of casting David Bowie as Niander Wallace, the malevolent, philosophical CEO of Wallace Corporation and the man behind the new generation of replicants.

What Happened?: Bowie of course died in early 2016, six months before the movie started shooting, leading Villeneuve to seek out a "David Bowie type", and eventually landing on Jared Leto.

Did It Work?: It's incredibly sad that the world was deprived of seeing Bowie work with an artist of Villeneuve's calibre, but Leto gave one of his more memorable and entertaining recent performances, even if the Wallace role was smaller than many seemed to expect.

Leto was great, but Bowie would've truly been a sight to see.
