The inevitable delve into McGowan’s instigations of the #metoo movement was of course crucially important for Theroux to cover, but for anyone who’s listened to the entire podcast, you’ll know her activism is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to exploring who McGowan is as a woman.

They begin by discussing her childhood, and the biggest standout is the fact that her family were once part of the Children of God cult - an extreme Christian community group that was notoriously known for expressing controversial views regarding the sexual spiritualisation of young women during the '70s and '80s.

Theroux himself even encountered the cult in 1998 as part of his own investigative journalism. The group were the subjects in the first episode of his debut documentary series, Louis Theroux’s Weird Weekends.
