12 Things You Learn Rewatching Avengers: Endgame
6. "No Amount Of Money Ever Bought A Second Of Time"
There have been many crushingly ironic moments scattered throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Stephen Strange was the only one who could have saved his own hands, Tony was almost killed by his own weapon, and in trying to destroy the Avengers, Ultron gave the team one of its strongest ever.
In Avengers: Endgame, there is another piece of irony that almost steps on one of the more touching moments, essentially ruining a sweet conversation between Tony Stark and his father when you think about it enough.
Tony said to Howard that his father occasionally dropped the odd pearl of wisdom, with one of his favourites being "no amount of money ever bought a second of time". On the face of it, this is an incredibly profound thought about values, and what is really important in this life. However, it's not exactly true is it?
On the first watch you wouldn't necessarily think about how much money producing Tony's time machine, the suits, and the GPS would have cost, as we're used to this kind of technology in the MCU. However, it would have been impossible for the Avengers to go back in history without the vast Stark fortune. He literally bought time in a direct contradiction of his father's words.
