12 Things You Learn Rewatching Avengers: Endgame
5. Minor Plot Holes In New York
The whole time travel thing can be very dangerous when it comes to writing a narrative as it opens the entire story up to potential plot holes and inconsistencies. Unfortunately, Avengers: Endgame was no different, and while there were some bigger questions to ask that came up immediately, a rewatch allows focus to pull onto the smaller stuff.
There were two things that came up during the New York part of the time heist that, while they weren't necessarily contradicting anything, they certainly required more explanation for what happened the first time around in 2012. This was never given, and it seems impossible to fill in these gaps without causing any plot holes.
The first comes back to the infamous Shawarma scene. Thor referenced the meal the six heroes enjoyed after the Battle of New York, telling Alexander Pierce they were having a spot of lunch and then heading to Asgard, which again raises the question of Loki. Where was he when the Avengers were having lunch, and how could Thor feel comfortable leaving him alone after what had just happened?
Then there is Secretary Pierce himself. He confronted Thor and Tony about possession of the Tesseract, with the only thing keeping it from him during the time heist being the mild cardiac attack Scott gave Tony. However, this begs the question, what happened the first time around? Thor took the Tesseract back to Asgard without Tony's near death experience, and seemingly without any interference from S.H.I.E.L.D., so what exactly happened to make Alexander Pierce okay with such a situation after the original Battle of New York?
