12 Things You Learn Rewatching Avengers: Infinity War
4. Thanos Tests Gamora
As much as Thanos murdering Gamora for his own ends shows that he ultimately doesn’t care for her as much as his own goals, there’s a serious amount of stuff in the film that highlights the extent with which the mad titan cares for his adopted child – even if his care is completely unhealthy, on several levels.
Notably, the Collector we see cheering Gamora with chants of ‘bravissimo’ after she seemingly kills Thanos is actually part of the illusion Thanos throws up – showing that Thanos still holds respect for Gamora’s fighting skill, even when that skill is aimed squarely at murdering him.
Indeed, all the way until her demise, Thanos appears to be continually testing Gamora, to see her physical, mental, and moral limits. Whether this is supposed to show affection, however, or a callous checking of how effective he was as a teacher, is entirely up to interpretation.
